Salient Features of the Course Content

Biochemistry subject curriculum was designed in such a way that undergraduate students obtain the basic and thorough base in the subject which may help them in pursuing their further studies in the field of life sciences.

The first year students are provided with the fundamentals thorough bioorganic chemistry (I and II in I and II semesters respectively) which introduces the basics of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, vitamins, antibiotics. They are provided with allied course chemistry for both semesters apart from language and English papers. The department also offers a non – major elective of introduction to lifestyle diseases offered for non – science students. They are provided with major and allied practical classes.

The second year students are provided with the fundamental instrumentation knowledge through biophysical and Bioanalytical techniques (I and II in III and IV semesters, respectively) which provides a sound knowledge of various techniques such as chromatography, centrifugation, and spectrophotometry. They are provided with allied course zoology for both semesters apart from language and English papers. They have major and allied practicals.

The third year students study little deeper through enzymes and intermediary metabolism – I which gives an in-depth knowledge about enzymes and intermediary metabolism – II, which gives information about the metabolism pathways in our system molecular biology which gives in-depth knowledge about DNA, RNA, Replication, Transcription, Translation, genetics and r – DNA technology which gives information about the gene, its inheritance and role played and recombinant DNA technology explains various microbial interconnection, Microbiology and Biotechnology.

They are also provided with immunology which gives information about the basic immunological aspects of our system, human physiology which deals with the organs of our body, Ecotechnology and human rights which deals with ecology and basic concepts of human rights, clinical biochemistry which gives information about the application of biochemistry in clinical perspective, endocrinology and nutritional biochemistry which deals about hormones and basic food habits to be practiced in the final semester. They also have a major practical paper apart from value based education which infuses the teachings of holy trinity.
